Course Description

The EiHS CIRM Summer Program to Accelerate Regenerative Medicine Knowledge (SPARK) is a hands-on research experience run collaboratively by Pathways to Stem Cell Science and the California Institute of Technology (Caltech).  Funded by a grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), EiHS CIRM SPARK enables six students to participate in stem cell research at Caltech on a full tuition scholarship.  EiHS CIRM SPARK is part of a larger CIRM funded initiative to provide advanced science education to low income students who lack the means to participate in summer research programs.

CIRM SPARK scholars follow a similar curriculum to the EiHS Research Internship Program, completing introductory training, hands-on research and educational forums focusing on a range of topics from ethics, to career development to entrepreneurial science. They also take part in math tuition classes, social media activities and attend the CIRM SPARK Conference - a state-wide event showcasing the research and achievements of CIRM SPARK students from around California.

Eligibility

EiHS CIRM SPARK is reserved for socioeconomically disadvantaged students from low income families living at or below the federal poverty level.  Financial eligibility is determined using the federal poverty guidelines (https://aspe.hhs.gov/poverty-guidelines), which are issued every year by the department of Health and Human Services and adjust annually for families of different sizes. Scholarships are awarded preferentially to at-risk students requiring intervention and support to attend a four-year college. Participants are accepted through a competitive application involving an online application and in person interview. To fully benefit from the program you must excel in high school science and cope well with challenging learning situations. Eligible applicants must be:

  1. 15 years of age or older on the date the program begins.
  2. Proficient in Biology, Mathematics and English, having passed two year-long courses in each subject with a grade C or   above.
  3. Passionate about science with an aptitude for experimental research. Examples of this could include high-school science classes or extracurricular activities such as science fairs.
