High School Programs

Introduction

Originally known as the EiHS Program, our high school courses have grown to become a career kick-starter for aspiring scientists.

Pathways to Stem Cell Science offers a variety hands-on courses and workplace internships for high school students in grades 9-12. Participating students can select from a catalog of vacation, afterschool and field trip programs to suit their time, interests and aptitudes. Each course is adapted from professional industry training programs and features sophisticated real-world science in addition to hands-on lab classes.

Originally developed by our executive director Dr. Victoria Fox at the University of Southern California (USC), our high school courses have become known as a career kick-starter for aspiring scientists. They provide a rare opportunity for high school students to step into the shoes of stem cell researchers and gain broadly applicable skills required by many bioscience industries. Participating students learn to isolate, culture and differentiate a variety of human stem cells using real-life scientific methods. They also network with guest speakers and gain career guidance during seminars that explore real-life bioscience occupations. Through this unique approach, our students learn how academic subjects translate into jobs and also qualifications and experiences that are needed for bioscience occupations.

Our innovative programs provide the only opportunity for pre-college students to gain experience and training in an entrepreneurial biotech setting. All courses are taught in a “biotech incubator” by experienced scientists who know what it takes to forge successful science careers. Students work hands-on with human stem cells during small classes with a student teacher ratio of 5:1. They gain the same personalized training as one-on-one internships and learn professional work skills in unique real-world courses that simulate employment.

Unlike traditional university-based programs, we expose students to the vast array of professions that exist within the biosciences industry, ensuring they understand all the career options available to them, not just medicine and scientific research. In addition to acquiring valuable experiences for their college resumes, our students also head to college understanding how to develop a viable bioscience career plan.
