The California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM) was created by Californians in 2004 by the passing of Proposition 71. Its mission is to fund stem cell research throughout California with the goal of accelerating treatments to patients with unmet medical needs. To ensure a pipeline of well-trained and talented stem cell scientists, CIRM has invested heavily in education programs like the Summer Program to Accelerate Regenerative Medicine Knowledge (SPARK). In collaboration with Caltech scientist Dr. Henry Lester, Pathways to Stem Cell Science has received a five-year CIRM SPARK award to fund the establishment of a hands-on research program. The EiHS CIRM SPARK program enables six underserved and disadvantaged high school students to train in our facilities and then participate in stem cell research at Caltech. Pathways to Stem Cell Science was also recently awarded a grant to host the 2019 CIRM SPARK annual meeting. This event brings together CIRM SPARK fellows and mentors from 7 participating research institutions across California, in addition to recognized educators, scientists and luminaries.
